Goth Music Ring

Welcome to the landing page for the Goth Music ring, for fans of goth music and bands on the indie web. Whether you're a baby bat, in it for the long run, or just a casual fan of some of the more popular bands in the scene, this ring is for you to explore the music tastes of others and develop your own!

Page is still in the early stages, background and certain style elements may change. Also if you have an idea for a better name please let me know.

By definition, goth music is made up of a relatively small set of genres, including gothic rock, post-punk, and darkwave. These genres are more often than not held up as ‘true’ goth music, with other genres commonly enjoyed by goths (e.g. gothic metal, industrial) being excluded. In practice, however, what exactly counts as goth music can vary from person to person, community to community, generation to generation. Hell, Robert Smith claims that The Cure isn’t goth, so who knows at this point.

Particularly well-known goth bands include:

• Siouxsie and the Banshees
• The Sisters of Mercy
• The Cure
• Joy Division
• Bauhaus
• Strawberry Switchblade

And too many more for me to add. There’s already a nice variety in there, I’d say.

You’re not goth. Why are you making this?

Very good question! There’s three main reasons -

• There is a sad lack of genre-based webrings currently active.
• I couldn’t find a single goth webring from later than the 2000s (how?!).
• And, well, I do casually like some goth bands, to be honest.

Hey, didn’t look like anyone else was gonna do it.

Anyone who has their own hand-coded site, and listens to and enjoys goth music, simple as that. You don't need to have any reference to your music taste on your site, but it would be appreciated so we can get to know your tastes a little better! Even something as small as a couple stamps of the bands you like or a last.fm link is good. (Although, I can't foresee anyone with zero music references on their page being enthusiastic to join a music ring.)

Standard rules and common decency apply - no pages with bigotry, hate speech, etc. will be included. This ring is open to all age groups, and so I cannot accept any strictly NSFW sites. As with many rings, I reserve the right to reject anyone for any reason, should I decide it’s appropriate or beneficial to do so. But I doubt that’ll happen.

How to Join

This ring is made using the OnionRing script - you’ve likely seen it used before.

Copy and paste this code wherever you want your widget to be (please put it somewhere easy to find).

When that’s done, contact me in any of the following ways:

I check at least one of these platforms every other day, but if I take too long, feel free to send another message. I’ll add you to the member list as soon as I’m able! Let me know if you want any info of your site changed, such as a new URL, updated content warning, extra favourite bands, or pretty much whatever else you can think of.

To leave the ring, simply remove the widget from your site and contact me again with a short message asking to be removed. Please include your site URL to make things a little easier for me!
