I Have a Kitten Now

18/5/26

I wanna make this a little shorter since I… kinda don’t have much to say.

Firstly, I made a post a couple days ago about how maybe I won’t be the best cat owner. It was over 1000 words of essentially self pity and a severe lack of self reflection. All that I needed to say was, I don’t always act in the best interest of others, I can often neglect my responsibilities, I’m easily agitated, and I fear that this may impact my ability to be the primary carer of any living thing, never mind an animal. Writing that essay helped me to grapple with my thoughts but it didn’t need to be published.

Second, in said post, I said that I only wanted to share more about the kitten when we’re on a lighter tone, and I think this is a good time.

At some point in this site there was a level of plausible deniability regarding my real life identity. A real life acquaintance could find the page and brush it off as someone with similar interests to me. I am giving up that deniability for this.

My friend’s cat got pregnant, somehow. One day I heard the suggestion that she ‘looks’ pregnant, on another I was told to come see her kittens. Three grubs sat in a pet carrier. They were ugly but I cared about them anyway. I got to watch them grow up! How heartwarming.

When the discussion of giving them away came up, I tentatively offered to take one if there happened to be any left over once they were old enough to leave. While they did all get claimed within a week of them being up for offer, some events came up which allowed me to grab one. I think another is now looking for a home again too… I won’t go into detail about what’s happening with the families who were supposed to take them, but I’m getting the feeling that these kittens are cursed. So, naturally, I brought one home myself.

His name is Yoghurt. He’s a fairly average kitten as far as I can tell. Bouncy, sleeps a lot, likes to scratch and bite my hands, et cetera.

His first round of vaccines were given a couple days ago now. We found out that he weighs 1.01kg. He took surprisingly well to being put in a pet carrier.

Right now this is his 6th day of being in our house. I think he’s adjusting well to the change. I mean, he did piss on my bed while I was in it on the first night, but he’s been well behaved since.

If I ever delete half the code from a page, he probably walked on my keyboard. He seems to like doing that.

(I’ll have to fix some of these images when I’m able to use my laptop without him crawling all over it…)

Actually, as a few hours have gone by while I was baking, I found some other things to say. Earlier today, Yoghurt perfected the art of grabbing onto my jeans and scaling my entire body to perch on my shoulder, no doubt to reach the cream cheese on our kitchen counter. I fed him some from my finger and just after licking it all off, he bit into me hard enough to draw blood for the first time. Ungrateful bastard.

We suspect that his older brother is his dad. At first there was the idea that both he and his older brother shared a father, whoever that may be, but as his litter have grown up… yeah no they’re definitely made from incest. Sorry.

Yeah, this is irresponsible, it’s bad to let your animals go outside unfixed- they’re not my cats. I will be getting Yoghurt neutered when he’s old enough.

He was the first of his siblings to start roaming his mama’s house, climbing furniture, getting himself out into the world. He’s fond of our houseplants more than anything else here, and seems to enjoy playing with soil. It’s kinda cute that he’s already taking to the outdoors. I thought that I’d get teased for suggesting that we train him to walk on a leash, but we’re starting to think he may legitimately enjoy that.

Every morning at 6am I wake up to him making biscuits on my face, which move onto my scalp and end in him trying to chew my earrings out my flesh. It’s the only thing he does that I truly cannot stand. It’s the only thing that makes me wonder if this was a good idea.

I somehow didn’t mention that most of his pawpads are a mix of pink and black…? They give him some extra personality.

Here’s Yoghurt in his favourite plant pot, and the cinnamon rolls that I was making earlier.
